A playlist by Bobby Apperson: What I’m listening to. Last month’s end of July list was a mix of Nefesh band members, podcasts featuring Rabbi Susan, and social justice pieces. It also featured many artists of color, especially Black women.
I post these playlists on weeks when Nefesh doesn’t gather for Shabbat service (the 4th or 5th week of the month). This month features more Sally Dworsky and Ari Herstand (Nefesh band), Jewish artists such as Leonard Cohen, songs about Jews (Israelites and Noam Chomsky), Hawaiian artist Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (Over the Rainbow, written by Jewish songwriters about the dream of coming to America), songs from the very Jewish Transparent soundtrack, and a John Prine song that was also covered by Sally.
It kicks off with an upbeat track in Hebrew by Los Angeles artist Fool’s Gold.
